Officials have disclosed that the cake linked to the death of a 10-year-old girl in Punjab contained a high concentration of artificial sweetener. The incident occurred on March 24 when the girl's entire family became ill after consuming a chocolate cake ordered online from a Patiala bakery for her birthday celebration. A sample of the cake was tested, revealing a high amount of saccharine, an artificial sweetener known for its intense sweetness. District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Vijay Jindal confirmed that while small amounts of saccharine are typically used in food and drinks, excessive levels can lead to a rapid increase in blood glucose levels.
Authorities have stated they will take appropriate action against the bakery, which could include a fine. An FIR has already been filed against the bakery's owner. A video of the girl's birthday celebration went viral on social media, showing the young girl, Manvi, joyfully cutting the cake and celebrating with her family just hours before her tragic death. Shortly after cutting the cake, the entire family, including Manvi's younger sister, became ill.
The girls experienced vomiting, while Manvi complained of dry mouth and intense thirst, according to her grandfather. The family rushed Manvi to a nearby hospital when she lost consciousness. Despite medical efforts to stabilize her with oxygen, she was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The family alleges that the chocolate cake from the bakery 'Cake Kanha' contained toxic substances.
