New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to two men imprisoned for four years in a case, saying it was not right to keep someone imprisoned for so long without a trial. The apex court has granted bail to two persons from West Bengal in a criminal case. Both of them were kept prisoners without trial for the last four years. A bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that the observation was made while hearing this. The court has said that 'We cannot promote a situation where an accused cannot be kept prisoner for such a long time without properly starting the trial'. Justice PS Narasimha was also present on the bench during the hearing. The court further said that in this trial going on for four years, the examination of the first witness has not been done yet. According to the trial court, the petitioner is granted bail subject to certain term conditions. According to the information received, this is a case of 2018, in which 414 kg of ganja was allegedly seized. However, challan was presented in this case and charges were framed. But this case was not pursued further. The apex court, however, said that if the appellants seek delay in the trial, "we allow the trial court to be made a prisoner back". The court said the appellants are required to make their presence felt on all the dates fixed by the trial court.
