India Aims to Achieve Nationwide Adoption of E20 Fuel by 2025: PM Modi

GOA: During the G20 Energy Ministerial meeting in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant announcement stating that India has initiated the implementation of 20% ethanol-blended petrol this year, with the ultimate goal of covering the entire nation by 2025.

In his address, PM Modi emphasized the need to bridge technology gaps, promote energy security, and diversify supply chains.

Over the last 9 years, the central government has managed to provide LPG connections to more than 190 million families and successfully achieved the historic milestone of electrifying every village.

PM Modi expressed the country's commitment to work towards inclusive, resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy for all. He highlighted the success of the LED distribution program launched in 2015, which has become the world's largest, saving an impressive 45 billion units of energy annually.

India is also making commendable strides in green growth and energy transition, despite being the most populous nation. PM Modi proudly mentioned that the non-fossil, installed electric capacity target was achieved nine years ahead of schedule. Now, the country has set an even higher aim: to achieve 50% non-fossil installed capacity by 2030, establishing India as one of the global leaders in solar and wind power.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also shared his optimism, stating that by 2025, the entire country will have special fuel stations retailing E20 petrol. The successful and rapid rollout of these fuel stations has given confidence to meet this ambitious target. E20 fuel, a blend of 20 percent ethanol with petrol, promises to be a greener alternative.

The adoption of ethanol blending in petrol has seen a significant increase over the years, rising from 1.53 percent in 2013-14 to over 11.5 percent as of March 2023. In terms of volume, ethanol-blended petrol consumption has soared from 38 crore liters in 2013-14 to an impressive 433.6 crore liters in 2021-22.
