India won gold medal in chess Olympiad

On Sunday, the country has created history by winning the Chess Olympiad for the first time. The country was declared the joint winner with Russia in the final match of the online chess Olympiad. The country has won the gold medal in this Olympiad for the first time, while Russia has achieved it 24 times.

In the final, an awkward situation took place when the Indian team members Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh lost their internet connection. This happened in the second round in the final match of Chess Olympiad, after which the country made an official appeal. After this investigation, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovichdecided to give gold medals to both the teams.

This is the first time the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has organized the Olympiad in an online format. This was done due to the corona pandemic. Currently, in the Indian team, Vidit Gujarati, former world champion Vishwanathan Anand, Koneru Hampi, D Harika, R Pragnananda, P Harikrishna, Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh have represented the country in the final match against Russia.

In the final match, Russia was first declared the winner of the Chess Olympiad, but the country filed an appeal and after investigation, both India and Russia were declared joint winners. This was the first time that the country had reached the final match of the FIDE Chess Olympiad. Before this, India's best performance in the Olympiad was in the year 2014, when the country won the bronze medal.
