Indian Navy set to commission INS Visakhapatnam on Sunday

Mumbai: The Indian Navy has announced that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be the Chief Guest at the commissioning ceremony of INS Visakhapatnam, the first ship of Project 15B. The commissioning ceremony will take held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on November 21 (Sunday). Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, will also be the Chief Guest during the commissioning ceremony of the fourth Kalvari Class submarine, Submarine Vela, on November 28.

"We are prepared for the commissioning of the INS Visakhapatnam. Today, our indigenous content is at an all-time high. Following commissioning, we will conduct a few more trials before joining the fleet "Captain Birendra Singh Bains, the INS Visakhapatnam's Commanding Officer (designate), said this.

The commissioning of the 'Visakhapatnam' and 'Vela,' according to the official announcement, are key milestones demonstrating the Indigenous capability to build complex combat platforms. This will increase our capability and firepower in dealing with threats both above and below water.

"The Visakhapatnam class ships, which are made of indigenous steel, are the successors to the Kolkata class destroyers that were commissioned in the last decade. The Directorate of Naval Design designed the ship, which was built by M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai. Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal, and Surat are the names of the four ships, which are named after key cities in the country "read the official press release.
