India’s youngest Wushu Champion Pawan Gupta shares multiple benefits of learning the sport

We have witnessed mainstream sports gaining tremendous momentum in the last few years. While sports like cricket, hockey, chess and kabaddi are popular in India, there is one unique sporting activity that is eventually becoming popular. Wushu, a form of Chinese martial arts is an international sport under the International Wushu Federation. The sport has given immense recognition to one of the profound names Pawan Gupta. 

Gupta in his extraordinary career has won several medals and is a recipient of various Wushu Championships. With experience of more than ten years in the sport, Pawan Gupta is India’s youngest Wushu Champion. More so, he is also the 4-time National Champion in kickboxing. Based in New Delhi, Pawan is playing the sport for over 12 years and is completely passionate to bring gold for India in the coming years.  

The primary reason behind Pawan Gupta choosing Wushu is that the sport has ignited the spirit of never giving up in life. Furthermore, he was asked why an athlete must learn Wushu. Replying to it, Gupta stated that the sport can benefit both physical and mental health. Speaking about it, he said, “Wushu is a type of sport that can help in getting the full-body workout done. Repetitive movements like high kicks and mobility movements can help in increasing body flexibility. If you see, the sport can also contribute in performing self-defence manoeuvres to combat the threatening situations in real life.”

Mastering the art in this sport, Pawan Gupta has earned an array of awards including a bronze in the 8th Asian Wushu Championship for men’s 65 kg in 2012. In the International Wushu Championships under the weight category of 70 kgs, he bagged the third position and received an award from the Traditional Wushu Federation of Armenia in 2017. In the same year, he emerged 2nd in the Asia Sanda Championship.

To promote the sport extensively, Pawan Gupta is planning to establish a Wushu training academy in India. Through this academy, he aims to train thousands of athletes who can play the sport and represent India on an international level. Giving the multiple benefits of learning Wushu, Pawan Gupta is looking forward to bring this sport in the limelight.
