Ujjain: Madhya Pradesh Police cracked down on an international betting syndicate in Ujjain district, apprehending nine individuals and confiscating over Rs 14 crore, a police official disclosed on Friday. The authorities also seized a cache of items including 41 mobile phones, 19 laptops, 5 Mac minis, an iPad, national and international SIM cards, 2 pen drives, 3 memory cards, along with other communication devices, silver bars, and various international currencies from the location. Ujjain Inspector General (IG) Santosh Kumar Singh elaborated, "Acting on intelligence, the police raided duplex no. 18 at 19 Dreams Colony in Neelganga police station limits, where individuals from Punjab, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, led by the main accused Piyush Chopra, had been operating a large-scale international betting operation for several days. Subsequently, a total of nine suspects were arrested during the operation." The police received additional intelligence indicating that the prime accused, Piyush Chopra, was residing at his residence in Musaddipura under Kharakuan police station limits, Ujjain. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a substantial amount of cash, silver bars, electronic devices, and Rs 14.58 crore in Indian currency, stored in 11 bags. Various international currencies such as those from Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Euro, Pound, US Dollar, and Nepalese Rupees were also seized. However, the main accused remains at large, and authorities are actively pursuing his apprehension. A case has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 109, 120B, as well as sections of the Public Gambling Act and the IT Act. Investigations are ongoing. Among the nine individuals arrested, four are from Punjab, four from Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, and one from Rajasthan. They have been identified as Jaspreet Singh (30), Satpreet Singh (34), Gurpreet Singh (36), Chetan Negi (37), Rohit Singh (26), Gaurav Jain (26), Akash Masihi (26), Mayur Jain (30), and Harish Teli (36).
