Iran, Pakistan deporting over 1 Million of Afghan refugees this year: IOM

Kabul: Since the beginning of this year, more than 1 million Afghan refugees have returned or been deported from Pakistan and Iran, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

"Undocumented, burdened by obligations, and without community support," the UN agency wrote on Twitter. This year, more than a million Afghan migrants have returned or been deported from Iran and Pakistan, and they are in desperate need of assistance. At a difficult time, IOM protection personnel are aiding them." The IOM protection teams are aiding the returnees during a difficult time, according to the agency.

More than 1,900 vulnerable undocumented returnees have received emergency humanitarian assistance at the main border crossing points with Pakistan and Iran since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan at the end of August, and tens of thousands of people, including many entering Afghanistan, have been screened for Covid-19 in an effort to control the spread of the pandemic, according to the agency.

IOM's budgetary requirements for Afghanistan in 2021 under the joint Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) total USD108.5 million, with 1.9 million people targeted among the most vulnerable, including those on the move. The strategy includes a USD24 million appeal, which was launched in August and addresses immediate financing requirements to meet urgent humanitarian needs.
