Iran President calls for international resistance to US 'cruel' oil, gas sanctions

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has encouraged the international community to oppose the United States' unilateral "cruel sanctions" against other countries' oil and gas industries, According to the Iranian presidency's website.

Raisi said on Tuesday at the sixth summit of the 11-member Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha that imposing hegemonic will and demands on other independent states through sanctions is no longer an effective strategy in today's world because it endangers the GECF members' collective interests.

Iran has significant capacities for the production, transfer, and export of hydrocarbon products as one of the world's largest holders of natural gas reserves, he said, and seeks to play a larger role in ensuring global energy security by expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation with neighbours and other countries.

Iran's regional strategy is centered on growing gas production and exports, as well as providing neighbouring countries with the greatest possible access to clean fuel, said the Iranian President. He asked the international community to embrace multilateral actions aimed at assuring the security of a sustainable energy supply while also conserving the environment. Raisi arrived in Qatar on Monday for a meeting with the Emir of Qatar and to attend the GECF summit.
