TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said a "positive" and "reliable" outcome in the Vienna discussions on the renewal of the 2015 nuclear deal is possible provided the United States takes its political decision and follows through on its pledges. Amir Abdollahian reportedly said that Enrique Mora's travel to Iran and his conversations with Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani "were another opportunity to focus on steps to settle the remaining concerns." Also on Friday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that the meetings between Mora and Iranian officials in Tehran had made "enough progress" to reopen nuclear talks after a two-month stalemate. Iran and international powers, including the US, signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on nuclear cooperation in 2015. Former US President Donald Trump, however, pulled the US out of the agreement in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran, including blocking some of Tehran's foreign assets, causing Tehran to back out of some of the accord's nuclear commitments.Notably, eight rounds of discussions between Iran and the remaining JCPOA parties have taken place in the Austrian capital since April 2021. In fact, Iran demands guarantees that the US government will not abandon the agreement and that sanctions will be withdrawn in a transparent manner.
