The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued an advisory on Friday after many global and Indian airlines, banks, and institutions faced significant disruptions due to a Microsoft product outage. According to CERT-In, the issue stemmed from a recent update to the CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor on Windows hosts. This update caused systems to crash and display the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The CrowdStrike team has since reversed the problematic changes. Electronics & Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) is in contact with Microsoft and its partners regarding the outage. Vaishnaw assured that the cause of the outage has been identified and that updates to fix the issue have been released. He also confirmed that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) network was not affected. CrowdStrike-Microsoft Outage Issue Microsoft users worldwide, including in India, reported widespread service outages. Outage tracking website Downdetector indicated disruptions across various Microsoft services. The cloud outage even led to the cancellation of flights by US airlines, although Microsoft later confirmed that the issue in the Central US region was resolved. A user on X posted a screenshot of an alert from CrowdStrike, stating that the company was aware of reports of crashes on Windows hosts related to its Falcon Sensor platform. This alert was posted on a password-protected CrowdStrike site and has not been independently verified. The recent update from CrowdStrike has been identified as the cause of the outages affecting Windows-based desktops and laptops. Microsoft, CrowdStrike, and Windows are currently trending on X, with users on Downdetector reporting issues across Microsoft’s services, including Azure and Teams.
