Rajiv Gandhi, India's youngest ever PM, was born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, British India. He was named Rajiv Ratna Gandhi at birth, though he later came to be known as Rajiv Gandhi. During his birth, his family was involved in the freedom struggle. Rajiv's maternal grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, mother Indira Gandhi, and father Feroz Gandhi were fighting for the country's independence. After Independence, his maternal grandfather became the first PM of India. With this, his family shifted from Lucknow to the national capital, Delhi, forever. His schooling took place at Doon School in the Himalayan. After schooling, he joined Trinity College at Cambridge University but soon shifted to Imperial College in London. There he studied mechanical engineering. His entire family was in Politics, but he was interested in science and engineering since childhood. After completing his studies, he returned to India and got a commercial pilot's license at the Delhi Flying Club here, and became a pilot in Indian Airlines. After the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi on June 23, 1980, Congress workers requested Indira Gandhi to motivate Rajiv Gandhi to enter politics. On February 16, 1981, Rajiv Gandhi entered active politics, after which Rajiv contested and defeated Sharad Yadav by more than 2 lakh 37 thousand votes. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, he became completely involved in politics. Elections were held soon and the Congress-led by him set a record by winning 401 Lok Sabha seats. He became the youngest PM in the country at the young age of just 40.
