CHENNAI: Kamal Haasan, the actor-turned-politician, has unveiled the second list of candidates for his Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party in the upcoming Urban local body elections, which are expected to take place in February. There are 33 candidates for Madurai, 13 for Chennai, two for Avadi, and three for Bodi on the list. Kamal Haasan had previously issued the first list, which included the names of 47 candidates running in the Coimbatore district election. The MNM was unable to make a difference in the recent rural local body elections, with the party failing to win any seats. Kamal Haasan also lost the Coimbatore South seat in the 2021 Assembly elections to BJP politician Vanathi Sreenivasan. According to party sources, Kamal Haasan believes that the Urban local body elections are the greatest opportunity to break the curse of losing elections and get into the winning mindset by focusing on problems that affect the public. In February 2022, elections to 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, and 498 town panchayats will be conducted for Urban local body elections, and MNM hopes to win at least 10 seats.
