A bizarre protest was demonstrated in Puducherry where the Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s effigy was burnt. The protest was staged by a group called the Puducherry Cauvery Protection Committee against the Karnataka government for trying to build the Mekedatu dam. The group had demanded that Centre should announce that the dam shall not be constructed over the river. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry people have been demanding that the proposal for the Mekedatu dam project be stopped. They have stated that the dam will affect the flow of water to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and also the livelihood of farmers in the delta who were dependent on the Cauvery water. Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin alleged that the Mekedatu dam initiative was a conspiracy to hinder water flow to the state. At a meeting of all parties with MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday, Stalin said the debatable question was how Karnataka would provide Tamil Nadu its share of water if it was to build the Mekedatu dam when it was not releasing the due share to Tamilnadu even during regular times.Against this background, if Karnataka were to build a new dam with a 67.16 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) capacity, the future of the state's farmers would be in peril and this was the danger that confronted Tamil Nadu, Stalin said.
