Karnataka: Congress seeks President's rule over kickback allegations against Bommai govt

Bengaluru: A delegation led by opposition Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar met Thaawarchand Gehlot on Thursday and submitted a memorandum seeking the imposition of President's Rule invoking Article 356 of the Constitution of India for the failure of constitutional machinery in the State, referring to the Karnataka State Contractors' Association allegations of payment of 40% of the project cost to government officers and elected representatives to get the project completed.

In the memorandum, the delegation also urged that a sitting Judge of the Supreme Court of India order a judicial investigation into the charges made by the above-mentioned Association in their July 6, 2021 letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We appeal to invoke the provisions of Article-356 of the Indian Constitution and send a report to the President of India stating that a situation has arisen in which the Government of Karnataka cannot operate effectively in accordance with the provisions of the Indian Constitution and for the imposition of President Rule on Karnataka," the memorandum stated.  “To order a judicial investigation by a sitting Judge of the Honourable Supreme Court of India into the accusations brought out by the above-mentioned Association in their memorandum dated;06-07-2021 addressed to the Honourable Prime Minister," as per  memorandum.
