Bangalore: As the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya approaches, the Karnataka police department has reportedly initiated investigations against activists associated with the Ram Mandir movement, accusing them of property destruction and other offenses during the peak of the movement thirty years ago. According to reports, a special team has been formed by the police department to compile a list of 'suspects' involved in incidents related to the 1992 Ram Mandir movement, which led to violence and intercommunal conflicts. In connection with an alleged incident of torching a minority-owned store in Hubballi on December 5, 1992, Srikanth Poojari has been taken into custody by the Hubballi police. Poojari is the third defendant in the case, and the police are seeking eight more defendants. Poojari has been placed under court supervision. Additionally, the Hubballi police have compiled a list of 300 'suspects' said to be linked to communal conflicts between 1992 and 1996. According to police sources, these 'accused' individuals are now in their early and late 70s, with many having left the city. Several of these 'suspects' currently hold prominent positions, and the police are reportedly considering the potential consequences of filing lawsuits against them. It is believed that the Congress government has instructed the police department to thoroughly investigate these cases. Many members of the Ram Janma Bhoomi movement have become prominent BJP politicians, and reports suggest that cases against these leaders were dismissed under BJP rule. Hindu organizations have strongly criticized the Congress government's actions, claiming that it is using this tactic to investigate cases reported thirty years ago in response to the BJP's door-to-door campaigning and the opening of the Sri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. This news is likely to fuel a significant debate in the state, particularly considering the major violence that erupted in Karnataka in the 1990s due to Islamist opposition to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement led by veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani.
