Kerala assembly adjourned after UDF protest

Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition Congress UDF organised protests in Kerala Assembly on Wednesday calling for Kerala Minister Saji Cheriyan's resignation a day after his comments critical of the Constitution sparked a political controversy. As a result, Speaker M B Rajesh adjourned the House for the day.

As soon as the House proceedings got underway, the opposition members marched into the House well while raising slogans for Cheriyan's resignation. They begged the Speaker to halt the question period so they could discuss their motion for an adjournment.

The Speaker asked them to cooperate with the question hour and noted that it was against House precedents and procedures, but the UDF members disregarded his request. As they continued to raise sologan and refused to return to their seats, Rajesh declared that the House was adjourned for the day. The opposition members then left the chamber while making insults at Cheriyan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for not calling for their resignation.

The opposition leaders addressed the media at the gate and claimed that despite their preparation to bring up the matter during the zero hours, the government made an effort to prevent having the UDF bring up allegations against Cheriyan.

They also said that it was "unusual" for the Speaker to adjourn the day's proceedings in response to an opposition protest during question period.
