THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala,  on Sunday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi's urgent personal intervention to lower high airfares in the post-COVID period for both domestic and international sectors.

The Kerala Chief Minister said in a letter to Prime Minister Modi that recent increases in domestic and international airfares have caused significant hardship for non-residents and have hurt the travel industry. He added that the increase in ticket prices will have an impact on both residents and non-residents, as well as Kerala's tourism industry.

"Let me draw your kind attention to an important issue that is crippling the travel business and making life extremely hard for non-residents. Recently, both domestic and international air travel has become prohibitively expensive. When compared to the fares that were in effect before COVID, they are extremely expensive "he wrote.

Vijayan claimed that the excessively high airfares are causing further misery for non-residents who have already been adversely affected by the pandemic.
