Kerala based Believers Eastern Church faced IT raid over alleged tax evasion

Kerala based Believers Eastern Church evangelist K P Yohannan's offices and residences faced the Income Tax department raid on Thursday. The raid started early morning today is still ongoing said the Official sources. After a compliant on alleged tax evasion and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations conducted by the Thiruvalla-based Church the raids were conducted.

The offices and residences of key persons associated with the Church situated in Kerala and other states are raided by the Special squads led by senior officials. The Income Tax team is also conducting a search at the medical college hospital run by the institution at Thiruvalla.

The Income Tax department is yet to reveal the  details of the raids. An unofficial and unconfirmed report says cash and few documents has been seized during the raid. Over a period of 18 years it has been alleged that the Church had received over INR 1,000 crore in foreign funds. Due to lack of transparency and doubtful transfers, the Believers Church has earlier courted controversy after the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2017 barred it and three NGOs associated with it from accepting foreign funds.
