Heavy rain with thundershower has been predicted at remote places over Tamil Nadu, largely in the districts of Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Coimbatore and Thoothukudi districts as well as over neighbouring Kerala on Thursday.
According to India Meteorological Department, ‘This is after the fairly widespread rain recorded over the larger South Peninsula on Wednesday as the North-East monsoon pulled itself together for a renewed spell of moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers over the region’. The Chennai office of the IMD, Regional Meteorological Centre, said that the sky may remain generally cloudy on Thursday with light to moderate rain lashing some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are probable to be around 30 and 25 deg Celsius, respectively.
The weather is primarily being dictated by a persisting cyclonic circulation over the South-West Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka. The medium-to-short-term outlook of the IMD suggests the possibility of a mostly steady stream of moisture and rain being maintained from the South China Sea and Indochina (especially Myanmar) across the Bay of Bengal towards the Tamil Nadu coast for the next week or so.
