Kerala Govt to distribute Rs 1,481.87 crore pension to 48 lakh poor ahead of Onam

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, announced that his government will distribute Rs 1,481.87 crore to poor people as pension in August, in a bid to bring Onam cheerful to over 48 lakh poor people, who have been hit the hardest due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kerala’s harvest festival Onam falls on August 20.

Pinarayi Vijayan, in a social media post, said that with Onam just round the corner it was necessary that poor people have money in their hands and hence, the Social Welfare Pension for the months of July and August was being distributed jointly. The distribution would directly benefit over 48 lakh poor people of the state who are entitled to the pension. The pension for the month of July -August would add up to Rs 3,200 and the govt would credit it to their bank accounts or it would be directly delivered at the doorsteps of the beneficiaries via the local cooperative banks. Distribution to all the 48, 52,098 beneficiaries is hopefully to be completed before August 10, he said.

Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by the Malayalis. It is one of the most awaited celebrations in the state of Kerala. This year, the ten-day Onam begins on August 12 and will last till August 23.
