Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to preside over a United Nation Security Council Open Debate. Accordingly, PM Modi will chair a high-level open debate on "Enhancing Maritime Security - A Case for International Cooperation" today (August 9) via video conferencing.

It was announced by the PMOP office late Sunday that the meeting is expected to be attended by several heads of state and government of member states of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and high-level briefers from the UN system and key regional organizations. It is learned that the UN Security Council has discussed and passed resolutions on different aspects of maritime security and maritime crime, as mentioned by the PMO.

The open debate will focus on ways to effectively counter maritime crime and insecurity, and reinforce coordination in the maritime domain. Notably, this will be the first time that maritime security will be discussed in a holistic manner as an exclusive agenda item in such a high-level open debate, it added.
