Kerala’s Senior Congress leader PT Thomas passes away

Kochi: P T Thomas, a senior Congress leader and Thrikkakara legislative Assembly member from Kochi, passed away. He was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife Uma and two kids, Vishnu and Vivek. The mortal will be brought to Kochi by evening.

P T Thomas was a four-term MLA who also represented the Idukki constituency in Lok Sabha. Thomas had been receiving medical treatment at Christian Medical College in Velloor, where he died on Wednesday. He was the working president of the KPCC.

Thomas, known for his strong environmental stance, faced opposition from the Church and other groups for his support of the Madhav Gadgil committee report on the Western Ghats. He had strongly criticised Pala bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt's controversial remarks on 'narcotic jihad.'

Thomas, who was born in 1950, began his political career as a member of the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the Congress's student organisation in Kerala. During his eventful political career, he held several positions, including state president of the KSU and Youth Congress.

In the Kerala Legislative Assembly, he represented the Thodupuzha constituency in 1991 and 2001. Thomas was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Idukki constituency in 2009. He was elected from Thrikkakara in 2016 and 2021.
