Know which vehicles can have the tricolor on them

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed to people to upload their selfies with the tricolour in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme. However, did you know that there are certain rules for the use and display of the national flag, violation of which is punishable?

Rules for applying the tricolor

Most people hoist the tricolour on their vehicles or bikes on Independence Day, but this is not legally permitted for everyone. According to the Indian Flag Code, 2002, only certain individuals have the right to hoist the tricolour on their vehicles. Also, according to the National Flag Code, while hoisting the tricolour, the saffron stripe should be at the top and the flag should be clean. A torn or dirty tricolour cannot be used.

Who has the right to hoist the tricolour?

The following persons have the privilege of flying the National Flag on their vehicles:

President Vice-President Governors and lieutenant governors Heads of Indian Mission Posts Prime Minister Cabinet Ministers Minister of State Chief Minister Speaker of Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker of Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Chairmen of Legislative Councils in States Speakers of Legislative Assemblies in States and Union Territories Deputy Speakers of State Legislatures Chief Justice of India Supreme Court Justices Chief Justice of the High Court

Punishment for breaking the rules

Citizens have complete freedom to hoist the tricolor on their house and carry the flag in their hand. But hoisting the tricolor on private vehicles is considered a legal offense. If someone violates this rule, action can be taken against him under the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971. Under this Act, a person found guilty of insulting the national flag, constitution and national anthem can be punished with up to 3 years in prison, fine, or both. So, if you are planning to put a tricolour on your vehicle, make sure you are following the legal rules. Otherwise, you may face severe legal penalties.
