New Delhi: Google is celebrating the 138th birthday of Polish inventor, doctor, and immunologist Rudolf Weigl by making doodles today. Rudolf Weigl worked on the epidemic typhus vaccine for a long time and vaccinated the world to get rid of it. His work was nominated not once but twice for the Nobel Prize, but he did not receive the award even once. In 1936, Weigl's vaccine successfully vaccinated its first beneficiary.
On September 2, 1883, Rudolf Weigl was born in Prerov, Moravia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time. His parents were Austrian-German. Rudolph Weigl was brought up in Jaslo Poland. The German-speaking Weigl then assimilated the Polish language and culture. Weigl later moved to Lviv where he graduated in biology in 1907. He then did his doctorate in zoology.
When Germany captured Poland during the Second World War, Weigl was forced to open a vaccine production plant. During this period, 5,000 people were rescued due to Weigl's work. Thousands of vaccines of this disease were distributed across the country.
