LS to adjourn till 2-pm today as voting for Prez-poll takes place

New Delhi:  Due to the fact that the Presidential election voting is taking place on Parliament grounds, Lok Sabha has been adjourned until 2 PM on Monday.

The Lok Sabha's sessions will then restart, said Speaker Om Birla. Om Birla paid respect to Mwai Kibaki, the former president of Kenya, and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former president of the United Arab Emirates. During the meeting, Birla also paid homage to Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister.

Also, Rajya Sabha proceedings have been suspended for the day due to opposition MPs' protests at the Well of the House against inflation and GST rate hike. Members urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appear before the House and address the pertinent concerns. The House will convene tomorrow at 11 AM, July 19.

The session kicked off with the voting for the President of India.  On July 21, the election results will be announced. The NDA candidate, Draupadi Murmu, is running against Yashwant Sinha, who is backed by the opposition parties.

Members of Parliament will cast their ballots inside a polling place that has been set up on the grounds of the Parliament. The Returning Officer for this election is the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha. The National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry are included in the Electoral College, which is made up of elected members of Parliament and state assemblies.

The Cantonment Bill and the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Bill are among the 32 Bills that the Center is anticipated to introduce during the session. 8 of these Bills are currently being debated by both Houses.
