Madras HC refuses to restrain EC from notifying polls to urban body polls

Chennai: On Friday, the Madras High Court refused to stop the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission from notifying urban local governments of elections.

The Court also postponed till January 24 the hearing of public Interest litigations seeking to postpone the election because to the third wave of COVID.

Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari of the Madras High Court and Justice PD Audikesavalu of the Madras High Court heard the case to postpone urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu till the COVID situation improves. Although the Court stated that notification has not yet been issued, counsel claims that it could be issued at any time.

The Supreme Court has given the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission an undertaking to notify urban local body elections before January 26, 2022. To deal with the COVID scenario, protocols and preventative measures have been implemented.

Because of technological difficulties with the video call, the case will be heard on Monday, according to the Chief Justice. The case was later adjourned.
