Madras University to form team to investigate study centre scams

CHENNAI: The University of Madras will form an investigative committee on Thursday to look into the degree examination scam involving people who aren't registered with the university. According to sources, the university syndicate will convene on Thursday, after which an investigating committee will be formed.

An initial investigation found that 116 people who were not enrolled as students with the Institute of Distance Education had taken the exam and were about to acquire degrees, according to University officials.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had enabled all those who had registered since 1980-81 to complete their study by writing the arrear examinations in 2019.

Candidates will be given degrees or diplomas based on the examinations they have taken and the amount of papers they have successfully completed. Candidates were given two chances to take the exams, in December 2019 and May 2020, after they were postponed owing to the Covid-19 epidemic.

The postponed exams were held in December 2020, and candidates were able to take them from the comfort of their own homes. Due to the university's online money collection system, numerous shady candidates had paid the exam cost and had exam registration numbers produced for them as well.
