Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said on Monday that his party and the Congress will field their candidates in 125-125 seats in the next month's Maharashtra assembly elections. Sharad Pawar has announced that the seat division has been finalized under his alliance with the Congress. The NCP president tweeted that the remaining 38 seats under the agreement would be left to coalition partners. There are a total of 288 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Pawar has said that NCP will give new faces a chance in this election. Some assembly seats will also be exchanged with the Congress. Both parties contested the 2014 assembly elections separately. There was no consensus on seat-sharing between the Congress and the NCP, after which Pawar's party broke the 15-year-old alliance. In the 2014 assembly elections, the Congress won 42 seats while the NCP won 41 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in these 2014 elections, occupying 122 seats. Many prominent leaders from both parties have left together before the alliance between Congress and NCP for the upcoming assembly elections. Most of these leaders have gone from NCP itself. Many of these leaders have joined the BJP and some have joined the Shiv Sena.
