3 children get HIV due to wrong blood transfusion, 1 died

Mumbai: A shocking case of gross disregard for human rights has come to light in the Nagpur district of Maharashtra. Here six thalassaemic children became HIV and hepatitis B positive, including one who died due to blood transfusion. In fact, for the treatment of thalassemia, blood was provided to the children from different blood banks, after which they were found to be infected.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took immediate cognizance of the media report in the matter and issued a notice to the Maharashtra government seeking its response. A notice has been issued to the secretary of the state food and drug administration department to submit a report on the preliminary inquiry into the matter within six weeks and initiate criminal proceedings.

The NHRC notice, citing media reports, mentioned that six children were being treated for thalassemia, with the first to be examined through the nucleic acid test (NTA) for blood transfusion. In the absence of this facility, contaminated blood was given to the children. In such a situation, due to blood transfusion, three children became HIV positive and three others were infected with Hepatitis B, one of them lost his life.
