In the past two weeks, telecom service providers have taken decisive action against spam calls and messages, resulting in the blacklisting of more than 50 entities and the disconnection of over 275,000 mobile numbers and telecom resources. This aggressive move follows the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) intensified efforts to tackle unwanted communications. Trai has announced that these measures are expected to make a significant impact on reducing spam calls, offering much-needed relief to consumers. The authority has urged all involved parties to adhere to the new directives and help create a cleaner, more efficient telecom environment. On August 13, Trai issued strict guidelines to telecom service providers, instructing them to immediately halt promotional voice calls from unregistered telemarketers utilizing telecom resources. Additionally, unregistered telemarketers found abusing telecom resources have been warned of severe penalties, including disconnection of resources for up to two years and blacklisting. These actions were prompted by a surge in complaints, with Trai receiving over 790,000 reports against unregistered telemarketers in the first half of 2024. Following these directives, Access Providers have implemented strict actions against the misuse of telecom resources for spamming. Over 50 entities have been blacklisted, and more than 275,000 SIP DID/mobile numbers and telecom resources have been disconnected. These measures are anticipated to significantly reduce spam calls and offer relief to consumers. TRAI is urging all stakeholders to adhere to these directives and help foster a cleaner and more efficient telecom environment.
