Hyderabad: A Malaysia Airlines flight bound from Hyderabad to Kuala Lumpur faced an unexpected setback early Thursday as it was compelled to return to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport shortly after takeoff. The pilot detected a technical issue with one of the engines while the aircraft was airborne.
Flight MH 199, carrying 138 passengers, took off at 12:45 am but had to swiftly reverse course due to the identified problem. It made a safe landing back at the airport at 3:21 am, where emergency landing protocols were promptly activated. The aircraft has since been grounded for assessment, according to airport sources.
Footage purportedly capturing sparks emanating from one of the engines circulated widely, further emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. Malaysia Airlines officially confirmed that the return was necessitated by an engine malfunction identified during the ascent after departure.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for Malaysia Airlines assured that the safety of passengers and crew remained paramount. All passengers and crew disembarked safely upon landing, and arrangements are being made to accommodate affected passengers on alternative flights for their onward journey.
The aircraft will undergo thorough inspection while grounded, as safety continues to be the airline's top priority.
