Man arrested under 'love jihad' law in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: A 39-year-old gym owner from Lucknow has been detained for allegedly posing as a Hindu guy to marry a woman, police said. He has also been committed with allegedly raping and assaulting the woman.

Chinhat police station In-charge, Tej Bahadur Singh said that the defendant, who went by the name Faisal Ahmad, pretended to be a Hindu and gave the woman Atharv Singh as his name. He then wed her at a temple to hide his identity, and when he forcibly persuaded her to convert her religion, she learned about it after the marriage.

Police said, the accused ran a gym inside the boundaries of the Gomti Nagar police station, where he first met the victim while she was there for fitness training.

The woman accused him of rape and having inappropriate intercourse with her, according to the police inspector. He said, the woman was assaulted, called names, and threatened with grave repercussions if she told her family or called the police.

He said that the accused has been arrested under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 420 for fraud, 377 for unnatural sex, 376 for rape, 323 for voluntarily causing hurt, 504 for insulting and 506 for criminal intimidation.

In addition to invoking specific IPC sections against the accused, he claimed that sections 3/4/5 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, and 3/5(1) of the Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act had also been utilised.

The Religious Conversion Act was implied the prohibition of unlawful conversion from one to another religion by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, allurement, and coercion and the Indecent Representation of Women Act was to prohibit indecent representation of women via ADs or in publications, writings, paintings, figures or in any other manner.
