The Manipur Congress has asked that Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhowmick be removed from her position for allegedly encouraging clashes between the Youth Congress and the BJP Yuva Morcha on January 6 in Imphal. State Congress president N. Loken accused Bhowmik for the clash, as did Congress general secretary and party in charge for Manipur Bhakta Charan Das. Members of the BJP's youth wing, BJYM, reportedly clashed after burning effigies of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in front of the party's headquarters. Members of the Youth Congress said that police pickets, which had become permanent features, had been abandoned and that staff had returned much later. They were also said to have been silent spectators. Police denied it, saying that the two groups were separated. According to BJYM president Barish Sharma, the effigies were burnt in protest of security failures during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Punjab. However, Representative H. Goswami said that BJP members kicked the Congress office's closed door and screamed slogans. The Congress has filed a police case against BJP members in Imphal for allegedly engaging in mob violence. "Setting the effigies on fire in this manner is extremely unlawful on the part of the Union Minister." Das suggested that the Prime Minister take action against her. According to Loken, BJP officials are engaging in such rude behavior since it is evident that the party will not be able to win power after the March election.
