Porbandar: Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, will spearhead a nationwide coastal and beach cleanliness drive in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, in honor of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. The initiative, organized by MY Bharat, aims to eliminate single-use plastic waste from India's beaches and coastal areas, marking the conclusion of the broader "Swachhata Hi Seva" campaign running from September 17 to October 2, themed "Swabhav Swachhata - Sanskaar Swachhata."
Mansukh Mandaviya's involvement underscores the government's commitment to sustainable environmental practices and aligns with the vision of a clean, single-use plastic-free India. Porbandar, significant as Gandhi's birthplace, serves as an apt location for this important initiative. MY Bharat, operating under the Department of Youth Affairs, has taken a proactive role in this year's Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, encouraging youth to actively participate in promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility. The campaign will culminate on Swachh Bharat Diwas, October 2, with MY Bharat youth volunteers leading a massive coastal cleanup effort.
The drive aims to target over 1,000 locations along India's extensive 7,500 km coastline, focusing on the collection, segregation, and disposal of single-use plastics. More than 100,000 MY Bharat volunteers are expected to participate in this nationwide cleanup, showcasing the power of collective action in achieving environmental sustainability. To bolster participation, the Union Minister has sent letters to MPs from all coastal districts, urging them to engage in the Swachhta Hi Seva campaign.
This year's Swachhata Hi Seva campaign has already reported considerable success, with over 5.6 million MY Bharat youth volunteers actively removing millions of kilograms of waste across the country as of September 30, 2024. Cleanup efforts have encompassed over 100,000 villages, more than 15,000 community centers, 9,501 Amrit Sarovars, and various historical and public spaces.
