Market Closing: Sensex rises 477 pts, Nifty settles at 17,233

The BSE Sensex and  the NSE Nifty50 indexes in India closed the day in the green, tracking gains in global markets, however, investors remained cautious due to concerns about the Omicron edition of COVID-19.

The 30-share Sensex closed at 57,897.48, up 477.24 points, or 0.83 percent, and the Nifty-50 was at 17,233.30, up 147 points, or 0.86 percent. Around 2519 shares have increased in value, 773 have decreased, and 99 have remained steady.

The Sensex's biggest gainers were Asian Paints and Sun Pharma, which both rose almost 1 percent. Similarly, Mahindra & Mahindra, Titan Comany, NTPC, and UltraTech Cement all gained more than 2 percent.

Other notable gainers included Larsen & Toubro, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Infosys, ITC, and Wipro.  Telecom stocks were in significant demand in the broader markets, with companies like MTNL and TTML trading at their respective 10 percent  and 5 percent  upper circuit limits.

The BSE Energy, IT, Telecom, Auto, Capital Goods, Consumer Durables, Oil & Gas, and Power indices all gained more than 1 percent. On the BSE, the overall breadth was also bullish, with more than three gaining shares for every dropping stock.
