Maximum 6,000 people from Manipur fled to Mizoram after Violent Clashes: Officials

MANIPUR: As per official reports, more or less 6,000 people from Manipur, which has been plagued by violence, have fled to Mizoram and sought refuge in various districts. They also noted that 5,822 members of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group are currently residing in temporary relief camps spread out across six different Mizoram districts. 

As per official data, currently, Aizawal district has the highest number of such displaced people in 2021, followed by Kolasib (1,847) and Saitual (1,790).

Mizoram Lok Sabha member C Lalrosanga has approved the demand for a separate administration for tribal people made by tribal MLAs in Manipur.  In the wake of the bloody skirmishes, 10 Kuki MLAs, including seven from the BJP, demanded that the Centre set up a separate administration, claiming that indigenous people could no longer live under the Manipur government.

After a "Tribal Solidarity March" was organised throughout the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, fighting broke out in Manipur. Tension over the displacement of Kuki people from reserve forest area had caused a number of smaller agitations before to the violence.

The majority of Meiteis (Maniopuries), who make up around 53% of the population of Manipur, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribes, who live in the hill districts.

The state's top officials, including the chief minister N Biren Singh, came in Delhi on Sunday afternoon to meet with representatives of the Union government to examine the fallout from the violence in Manipur. 

The focus of the conference, which lasted more than two hours, was the restoration of calm and harmony in Manipur. The state's leadership was urged to start talking to the general public right away and launch a massive information campaign on the crisis.
