Mexico: Mexico's first case of the Covid-19 Omicron variant was discovered in a person who arrived in the country from South Africa on November 21, according to the Health Ministry. According to media sources citing the ministry's announcement on Friday, the fully-vaccinated South African businessman developed symptoms of Covid-19 six days after landing in Mexico, was tested, and found to have the Omicron form. The 51-year-old patient has been admitted to a Mexico City hospital. "So far, no symptoms, warning signals, or positivity for the SARS-CoV-2 virus" that causes Covid-19 have been reported by anyone who came into contact with the first case, according to the ministry. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, Mexico's undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, said that the patient is suffering from a "minor sickness" and that "his recovery prognosis is favourable." To prevent future Covid-19 infections, Lopez-Gatell asked the public to remain calm and maintain social distance. According to the latest government estimate, Mexico has 3,894,364 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 294,715 deaths from the disease.
