ETAWAH: The 15-year-old rape victim at Mainpuri, Etawah, in Uttar Pradesh, who was allegedly raped by a relative and then set on fire, succumbed to her burn injuries during treatment at the Saifai Medical College hospital, police said. Police also said that a relative who lives in the same village raped the girl three months ago. It was on October 6, that when she complained of a pain in her stomach, her mother took her to a community hsopital where the doctor declared her pregnant. When the victim's mother told the accused's mother and sister about the alleged rape, they offered to marry her off to the accused and took the girl with them. On October 8 late evening, the accused allegedly set the girl on fire with petrol. Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamlesh Dixit said that the girl was rushed to a community health centre hospital, from which she was sent to the Saifai Medical College with critical burn injuries. The parents of the victim told reporters that the accused had been threatening them, so they were forced to cremate their daughter in Etawah on Monday instead of where they live, in their village. The SP also said that police have arrested the suspect and his mother, but that his sister, who is also suspected of being involved in the crime, is still on the run.
