New Delhi: While many states in India are supporting the population control law, the minister has announced a cash reward to increase the population in a north-eastern state. The case is in Mizoram, where Sports Minister Robert Romavia Royte has said that Rs 1 lakh will be provided to parents with the highest number of children in their constituency. He said trophies and certificates will also be presented to the winners. However, Royte has not made the announcement on behalf of the government. He says his son's company will bear the prize and an incentive of Rs 1 lakh. According to the Minister, fertility rate and declining growth rate of Mizo population have become a serious concern. "Mizoram is well below the number of people required to achieve growth in different regions due to gradual decline in its population," Royte said. The low population is a serious issue and a barrier to the survival and advancement of small communities or tribes like Mizo". He said the move is aimed at encouraging population growth to low-population of Mizo communities. He said some churches and civil society organizations like Young Mizo Association are also advocating a baby boom policy for population growth in the state.
