Delhi: Modi government brings bill for senior citizen's welfare

New Delhi: The Modi government of the Center is going to bring the bill related to the welfare of senior citizens in the country in Parliament. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Amendment Bill 2019 and the bill will be introduced in Parliament soon. This bill will meet the basic needs of senior citizens as well as provide security to them.

The Bill states that not only children will be responsible for the care of the parents, but also son-daughter, grand-son  and grand daughter, grand-daughter-in-law will be obliged to take care of them. These amendments are also being made in the 2007 bill related to the welfare of senior citizens and family members. According to this, the children in the family will now be responsible not only for their parents but also for the in-laws' care, even if they do not fall under the category of senior citizens.

The provision to extend the jail sentence of those violating this law is also included in this bill, which has been increased from 3 to 6 months. Here the term care has also been defined which includes living arrangements and security. The amount of maintenance will be determined on the basis of earnings of senior citizens, family, children and relatives.
