Modi government's big decision regarding road accidents, now this facility will be available immediately in hit and run cases

New Delhi: The Modi government at the Center has made elaborate arrangements to provide immediate financial assistance to the victims of hit and run road accidents. Under this a high level standing committee has been constituted. This committee will immediately provide a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the dependents of those who died in the accident from the Road Safety Fund. At the same time, financial assistance of Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued instructions in this regard to all the states on 5th April. The Central Committee will also conduct online monitoring of road accidents and related matters at the district level. Joint Secretary of the Ministry will head the Central Committee: Amit Vardhan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry will head the Standing Committee. The committee will have a total of 10 members including joint secretary of the finance ministry, CMDs of three insurance companies, director of road safety. A senior official of the ministry related to this subject has informed that a provision has been made to create a road safety fund at the district level. In this, the insurance companies will provide some part of the profit. The committee will play an important role in providing timely compensation to the victims of hit and run cases under the Motor Accident Scheme 2022. The committee will ensure that sufficient funds are available in the fund. Orders have been issued to constitute District Road Safety Committees (DRSC) under the leadership of DM by April 30 to make the scheme successful at the grassroots level. The committee will put all the activities related to road safety on the web portal every month.

What is hit and run case?

In the hit and run case, the person who hit the road escapes from the spot with the vehicle. The vehicle insurance company provides compensation to the dependents of the deceased or the injured person. The government also gives compensation in this case. According to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, about 70 thousand hit and run accidents take place every year. In this, an average of 28 to 29 thousand people die annually. That is, on an average 78 people are falling victim to hit and run every day.
