PM Modi hints, 'Minimum age of girls' marriage will change'

New Delhi: The Modi government is making changes in the minimum age limit of girls' marriage. The government believes that this decision will lead to a decline in maternal mortality. After this decision of the government, the minimum age of marriage of girls can be increased from 18 to 21 years. This decision will bring many changes to the lives of girls.

In a speech given from the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, PM Modi said that a committee has been formed to reconsider the minimum age for marriage of daughters. We will take an appropriate decision after the committee presents its report. Earlier, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had also said in her last budget speech that a task force would be set up to advise on the right age for a woman to become a mother.

There was a decision of the top court in October 2017 behind this decision of the government. The Supreme Court had said that child marriages should be declared completely illegal to protect daughters from marital rape. The apex court had said in its decision that the government itself should decide in this regard whether girls want any change in their marriage age. It is believed that the government has started the process with this decision of the top court.
