Mumbai Doctors Protest Over Safety Concerns Following Trainee Doctor's Tragic Death

Mumbai: Doctors and local residents gathered for a protest at Azad Maidan on Monday, demanding improved safety measures in the wake of the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.

Dr. Prerna Gomes from Jaslok Hospital, one of the leading voices in the protest, urged the government to mandate safety audits for all institutions. "We call on the government to ensure that every organization undergoes a safety audit. After more than 70 years of independence, it's unacceptable that we still face safety risks. Doctors prioritize patient care, but we also need a safe working environment," Dr. Gomes told ANI.

The protests were triggered by a horrific incident on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College. This incident has led to widespread strikes and demonstrations across the country by the medical community.

In response to the tragedy, the West Bengal governor's office has issued a directive to medical colleges in the state to enhance security measures and ensure the protection of female doctors and paramedics. "Today, Raj Bhavan has instructed medical colleges to strengthen security and provide adequate protection for women doctors and paramedics," said a statement from the Raj Bhavan Media Cell on X.

Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has undertaken a detailed 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College as part of their investigation.

The Supreme Court has also intervened, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra set to review the case on August 20.

The ongoing protests highlight the urgent need for improved safety protocols in healthcare settings to protect those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
