A school janitor has been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl on the school premises in the Santacruz area. The arrest was announced by officials on Friday. According to reports, the janitor is accused of assaulting the child over several months. The incident came to light when the girl disclosed it to her parents. Following a complaint filed by the girl's parents last Friday, the police registered a case against the janitor under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The suspect was promptly taken into custody. Based on a complaint by the child’s parents last week, the police lodged a case against the peon for rape and sexual assault under the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and arrested him, the official said. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is a legal framework enacted by the government of India to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation. It defines various forms of sexual offenses against children and prescribes stringent punishments for perpetrators. The act also outlines procedures for reporting, investigation, and trial of such offenses, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of children and provide them with justice and support.
