Maharashtra: Controversy over name of new airport in Navi Mumbai begins

Mumbai: Controversy has erupted over the naming of the new airport in Navi Mumbai as late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray International Airport. In fact, the State Government has passed a nomenclature resolution, but local leaders seem to be demanding the name of this new airport after late farmer leader D B Patil. Let us also tell you that Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde has assured the DB Patil Action Committee, formed by an alliance of local leaders, that he will be named after another project. However, local leaders are not convinced.

On the other hand, NCP leader and minister Chhagan Bhujbal has reacted to the controversy saying, "Instead of Thackeray, we would have preferred to name the airport JRD Tata. We have no objection to the names of Thackeray and Patil. But such an issue should be resolved by consensus.''

Chhagan Bhujbal also said, "If Bal Thackeray were alive, he would not have liked to name the airport after him and suggested jrd tata's name. The late Thackeray had suggested the name of 19th century social reformer Nana Shankar Seth for VT railway station. Because they knew that JRD Tata and Shankar Seth had made a significant contribution to the Railways in the aviation sector.''
