Nepal government hikes import tax on printed books, Gitapress in trouble

Gorakhpur: The Gitapress has come into crisis with a move by the Nepal government. The Nepalese government has announced an import tax on printed books. The tax is 10 per cent. This step will affect the Gitapress. The book is delivered to the whole of Nepal from the centre of The Gitapress in Nepal's capital Kathmandu. The tax is going to be a difficult one for the Gita Press. One of the trains carrying a book was earlier charged a lump sum tax of Rs 565. Now, 10 per cent of the total value of the books loaded on the train will have to be taxed.

In general, books worth seven-eight lakh rupees are sent to a vehicle. So, now, 70-80 thousand rupees have to be paid. Gitapress offers books at a lower rate than the cost price. Selling books in Nepal at a price higher than the print price would be against the Gitapress rule. Gitapress, on the other hand, gives shopkeepers a 22 per cent discount on their books anyway.

It has 18 per cent general discount and four per cent cash discount. In Nepal, Gitapress books worth about one crore rupees are sold in Nepal every year. Gita Press product manager Lalmani Tiwari said that about a month ago, the Nepalese government suddenly hiked the import tax. For this, we met the CM Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh, he has spoken to the Ambassador of Nepal in this regard. He has assured to find a way out.
