Major streaming providers are still hesitant to reveal any information on their tightly guarded audience data. The notion is that secrecy gives them a strategic advantage, which is accurate to some extent. However, stockpiling ratings data as if it were precious metals has its drawbacks (which is one reason we offered up a techno-utopian approach in our hypothetical new streamer). Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos, co-CEOs of Netflix, have frequently spoken about the need for greater openness in the business. Even if Netflix's self-reported data releases are cherry-picked to promote a favourable narrative, they provide additional data for curious onlookers to go through. At Code Con on Monday, Sarandos unveiled new statistics that helped build a picture of Netflix's most popular original films and shows. First, he revealed the member account viewership for Netflix's Emmy-winning series during the first 28 days of release, based on the streamer's usual two-minute-watched measure. The same may be said for the most recent Top 10 film list.
