A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Kolkata, West Bengal has launched an initiative to provide Covid positive patients with oxygen at their doors. The initiative, dubbed 'Oxygen on Wheels,' was launched by the Liver Foundation in collaboration with the health department of the West Bengal government in Kolkata, where two ambulances filled with oxygen are delivered to those in need at no cost.
"Currently, we have two ambulances with oxygen which is travelling throughout the city. It is being delivered at the patient's doorstep only if a Covid positive report is being shown," Partha Mukherjee of Liver Foundation said.
The service was provided by a three-person team led by the analyst. "We get multiple calls, but it is not practical to cater to everyone, but we try our best. Our focus is to provide immediate relief to the patient until a bed can be arranged. We are trying to work 24/7 but also have some limitations. There are some patients who are fine but due to panic they fear that their O2 levels are dropping down, we monitor it and try to help them in whatsoever way possible. There are also patients who are extremely critical and need O2 immediately," Mr. Dipesh, who was leading the team, said.
The primary goal of the Liver Foundation is to save the patients until something better can be arranged. In the coming weeks, the organization plans to launch similar services in Siliguri and nearby Kolkata towns.
