Nigeria - Lagos: According to a state official, thirty children and a teacher have been released after being kept captive for more than six months by gunmen who invaded their school in northwest Nigeria's Kebbi state and seized them in June 2021. The 30 students and their teacher from the Federal Government College in the Birnin Yauri area of the state arrived in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, on Saturday, according to Yahaya Sarki, a spokeswoman for the governor of Kebbi state. "While being reunited with their families, they will get medical examination and support," Sarki said. On June 17, 2021, a group of unknown gunmen assaulted the secondary school, killing at least one police officer and kidnapping an indeterminate number of pupils and instructors. Hundreds of students have been released in batches before the recent release, according to local media sources. A series of armed attacks, including school attacks and student kidnappings, occurred recently in the northern section of Africa's most populous country.
